Activdogs is now Steven Symonds — Dog Behaviour & Training. A name that better reflects the work I do.
SPECIALIST SMALL-GROUP TRAINING
Calm Around Movement
A jogger, bicycle or running dog does not have to take over the whole walk.
For herding-bred dogs, movement can be extraordinarily compelling. The useful skill is not learning to ignore the world completely; it is being able to notice movement, stay able to think and choose what happens next.
Training for Collies & herding breeds · Three small-group sessions · £75 per dog
From visually locked-on to able to notice, disengage and move on.
The answer is not repeated exposure until the dog gives up. We work at a level where your dog can still process what is happening, then build predictable alternatives: orient back to you, settle, search, move with you or simply allow the movement to pass.
01
Notice
Work with movement at a level where your dog can still think rather than becoming overwhelmed.
02
Disengage
Build pattern games, handler orientation and predictable routes away from fixation.
03
Choose something else
Settle, search, move with you or allow the movement to pass without needing to control it.
WE MAY WORK ON
Practical skills around movement
Noticing movement and disengaging · pattern games and predictability · handler orientation · settling while things happen nearby · movement at gradually manageable levels · appropriate search, chase and problem-solving outlets · reducing the need to remain visually locked onto the environment.
WHEN TRAINING IS NOT ENOUGH
Significant aggression or severe reactivity needs assessment first.
This course is suitable when movement sensitivity or fixation is part of everyday life. If the behaviour raises substantial safety or welfare concerns, Behaviour Support is the better starting point.
